Wednesday I met with Jonah's second grade teacher. I was proud to hear that Jonah is doing wonderfully in school. Doing well in math, reading and writing (though he does need to proofread and edit his work a bit). Funny, friendly, a leader. When no grown-ups are around he'll engage his classmates in activities. They like him! Best of all he is super self-motivated.
Jayden got her nursery school "report card" today. Her teachers, including Mrs. Rooney above, write, "Jayden approaches every project with enthusiasm and is able to stay on task with tremendous focus. Jayden's attention to detail will serve her well in kindergarten." They say she is determined, creative, imaginative, and good with blocks :-).
Today Jesse wrote a poem for his reading class. With the poet's permission, I've published it here.
Rebirth
by Jesse Lee, 4/16/09
A sullen stump,
listening keenly behind a
fallen tree with gnarly roots.
Beehives, half finished,
dangle from the leafy branches of
a mighty ash.
A great pine dies.
Its life sapped away by a tiny fungus.
The birch, strangled by the dark green ivy,
topples to the ground.
The lone tree, marked for death,
waves its branches alone in a field of life,
knowing that it is about to die.
The same tree stands boldly in front
of its to-be killers. The metal teeth,
the destroyers of all nature.
Their cold blades rasp, as they
slice easily through the warm and alive wood.
The mighty giant falls,
never to stand again.
The cold tears of Mother Nature
Converge on the once proud tree,
mingling with rain water.
Left to rot on the forest floor
the giants body slowly decomposes,
leaving in its place a pile of fertile peat,
ready to support new life.
Many years later, a tiny shoot
sprouts from the spot where the mighty oak once grew.
Coming to replace the giant.
